Cox Hall, built in 1960, was named after Gertrude Cox, the first woman to become full professor at North Carolina State University, who reached this position in 1942.
Gertrude M. Cox (1900-1978): Gertrude M. Cox (1900-1978) received her B.S. degree in mathematics and her M.S. degree in statistics from Iowa State College (in 1929 and 1931, respectively). In 1940, Cox was named the first female full professor at NC State University and, in 1944, head of the first statistics department in the country. During her career, Cox served as a consultant for various organizations, including the US Department of Agriculture and the World Health Organization. She retired from NCSU in 1960. The University honored Cox in various ways; a NCSU Fellowship Program and Cox Hall were named in her honor.
