Fred Derward Cochran (1910-2004): Fred Derward Cochran received his B.S. in horticulture from Clemson College in 1932, his M.S., also in horticulture, from Louisiana State University in 1933, and his Ph.D. in genetics from the University of California in 1942. Prior to joining NC State in 1947, Cochran served in the Army and taught at LSU. At NCSU, Cochran both taught and served as Department Head of Horticulture. Cochran received several awards for his service to the University before retiring in 1978.
