Carey Hoyt Bostian

Born in 1907 in China Grove, North Carolina, Carey Bostian graduated from Catawba College with a B.S. in 1928. From the University of Pittsburgh, Bostian earned an M.S. in 1930 and a Ph.D. in 1933.

Bostian taught at Catawba College for a summer session before joining the zoology faculty of North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering in the autumn of 1930. Bostian was named Associate Dean in the School of Agriculture in 1948, Director of Instruction in 1950, and Professor of Genetics in 1952.

Bostian assumed the chancellorship of North Carolina State College in 1953, and served until 1959, when he returned to teaching. During Bostian's tenure, NC State completed a multi-million dollar expansion, the program of student activities was greatly enlarged, and enrollment passed 5000 for the first time. Bostian retired from teaching in 1973, and died in 2000 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
