THE GRADUATE SCHOOL
Graduate instmction was first offered at North Carolina State University in 1893, and the first doctoral degree was conferred m 1926. In the ensuing years, the Gisdusm School bas grown steadily and now provides mstruction and facilities for advanced study snd research in the fields of agriculture md life sciences, design, education, engmeering, forest resources, humanities and social sciences, management, physical snd mathematical sciences, textiles snd veterinary medicine.
The Graduate School is currently composed of more than 2,000 graduate faculty members. Educated st major universities throughout the world and estabhshed both m advanced teaching snd research, these scholars guide the University's 5,150 master's and doctoral stwleuts from sll areas of the United States and many other countries.
The faculty snd students have available exceptional facdities, including libraries, laboratories, modern equipment and special research areas. Additionally, a cooperative agreement exists among the Graduate Schools of the University of North Csmlins at Chapel Hill, the Uoiversity of North Carolioa at Greensboro, Duke University aad North Carolios State University which increases the educational and research possibilities associated with each.
Graduate Student Association
Tbe Graduate Studeot Assocuuon (GSA) is an acsdenuc, political and social organization comprising all graduate students. It u governed by elected officers and represen-tstives from departmental GSA chapters. Officially recognized by the muversity as the voice of graduate students, it provides graduate stwlent
presentmon on various university committees. The GSA president has full voting membership on the Administrative Board of the Graduate School and meets regularly with other university officius.
Some services provxled by the GSA include travel reunbursemeut for presenting original research at professonal conferences, a graduate student onentation, a teaching effectiveness workshop aml outstsndmg TA awards, cash rebates to departmental chap-ters aod assistance with electronic commurucations among NC State graduate students.
The GSA can provide answers to questions regarding graduate student bfe and may be ~ via departmental repesentsdves or tbe GSA president, whose telephone raunber csn be obtamed from tbe Graduate School. Students may also vuit the GSA Home Page embedded in the Graduate School's Home Page ou the World Wide Web. AU graduate students are invited to attend the monthly meetings and become involved with the GSA.
