North Carolina State University (NC Slate) is a national center for research, teaching and exteasion. As a land-Grant state university, it shares the distinctive cbsractenstics of these institutions nationally-*roid academic offerings, extensive public service, national ard interoatiooal activities, and large-scale extensioa snd research programs.

NC State's rich ard varied academic program is comprised of 96 undergraduate
degree programs, master's degrees in 86 fields af study, 52 doctoral degree
programs and the doctor of veterinary medicine program. The University offers
approximately 2,900 courses.
Reseuch activities span a broad spectrum of scientific, technological and scholarly
erdeavors with a budget of some $170 million anaually.
Extension offices in each of the state's 100 counties and on the Cherokee Irdiaa reservation assist in carrying the University's teaching srd research programs throughout the state. The diversity of these programs spaos such fields as agriculture, design, education, engineering, forestry, humanities, management, marine snd envuoomental sciences, textiles, veteriasry medicine, and the physical, sacud std bfe sciences.
The University's annual expenditures reach approximately $454 milbon, ard its permanent employees total about 6,000. There are more than 2,700 faculty ard pmfessiansl staff, including approximately 2,000 graduate faculty. Among the many honors ard recogmtions received by members of the faculty are seven memberships in the National Academy of Science snd five in the National Academy of Engineering, 44 named professorslups, 14 distinguished university professorships and 16 Graduate Alumni Distinguished Professors.
NC State's campus, located just west of the downtown area of Raleigh, totals some 1,600 acres. This includes tbe ceotral campus of 623 acres with some 166 buildings,
