- 3/20/1875 Land scrip endowment restored An original land scrip endowment to the University of North Carolina as part of the Morrill Act (lost during the Reconstruction period) is restored. On paper, this creates a College of Agriculture and a College of Engineering and Mechanic Arts at the University of North Carolina.
- 1889 Department of English established
- 1889 Department of Chemistry established
- 1889 First library opens as a single room in Holladay Hall Daniel Harvey Hill, Jr., a professor of English and bookkeeping, is the first college librarian. For the next ten years, Hill ordered all of the books for the library and supervised the student assistants. Due to his scholarly interests, the early collection was dominated by the humanities and history, despite the agricultural and engineering focus of the curriculum.
- 1889 Department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany established Department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany established as one of the five original academic divisions of the North Carolina College of Agricultue and Mechanic Arts
- 10/1889 First English courses Courses in English are offered when the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts opens

- 10/1889 First Chemistry courses Courses in chemistry taught when the College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts opens
- 10/1889 First Botany courses Courses in botany are offered when the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts opens

- 10/3/1889 First classes held The first classes are held at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Fifty-two students, at the minimum age of 14, attend. Tuition was $20 a session. Students could select from two basic curricula: agriculture and mechanics.
- 12/9/1889 Agricultural Experiment Station transferred The Agricultural Experiment Station is transferred from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture to the North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts.
- 1890 (circa) Entomology curriculum established Entomology curriculum taught within the Department of Horticulture, Arboriculture, and Botany.
- 1890 Second Morrill Act becomes law The Second Morrill Act becomes law, requiring states to provide technical education for African Americans. No federal money would be disbursed to any college that made distinctions between students on the basis of race. States could comply, however, by providing separate colleges for blacks and whites.
- 1890 (circa) Zoology curriculum established Courses with content in zoology first offered
- 1890 Microbiology curriculum established Microbiology courses become a part of the curricula in the Zoology and Botany departments.

- 1893 Applied Science Curriculum A curriculum of applied science was added to the academic program.
- 6/20/1893 First commencement Nineteen students receive degrees during the first commencement ceremony held at A&M College.
- 1894 Department of Physics and Electrical Engineering established
- 1894 Military Program Military science and tactics is first taught at NC State. Students (they are all male at this time) are designated cadets and required to attend drill.
- 1895 Poultry Division added Poultry Division added to the North Carolina Agricultural Experiment Station
- 1895 Department of Civil Engineering and Mathematics established Mechanics Course curricula divided; result was the creation of the Department of Civil Engineering and Mathematics

- 1901 Second female student Eula Louisa Dixon takes a course in dairying, becoming the second female student at A&M.
- 1902 Department of Modern Languages established
- 1902 Botany curriculum established Botany curriculum is taught as a component of the Botanical Instruction program.
- 1902 First female faculty member Adeline Stevens, the wife of Frank Lincoln Stevens, becomes the first female faculty member, as an instructor in biology during the 1902-1903 academic year.
- 1903 Entomology curriculum established Entomology first listed as a separate subject in the course catalog, with classes fulfilling part of the four-year degree in Agriculture
- 1903 Women's enrollment grows Women's enrollment continued to increase during the 1903-1904 academic year. Evelyn Byrd Lawrence of Raleigh took a course in architecture, Ivey Roberts of Raleigh took a course in drawing, and Frances Claire Stainback took courses in chemistry and English. This was also the first year that women were listed as summer school students, and more than 200 women attended.

- 1910 Winston Hall opens Winston Hall opens, housing civil, chemical, and electrical engineering courses. It was named for second college president George Tayloe Winston.

- 10/15/1925 D. H. Hill Library opens in what is now Brooks Hall The original D.H. Hill Library in what is now Brooks Hall was built by Hobart Brown Upjohn and named for Daniel Harvey Hill, Professor of English when NC State first opened.
- 1926 First Ph.D. conferred The first Ph.D. is conferred; Jesse Mowry receives the degree in the field of Rural Sociology.
- 5/8/1926 Class field trip A professor and six students from the Economic Geology class took a field trip to Carolina Coal Mine, and became trapped in the mine for four hours.

- 2/5/1927 Academic regulations for athletes The Athletics Committee decides students must maintain a passing grade in 60% of their classes to play in collegiate athletic events.
- 2/26/1927 First female Phi Kappa Phi member Jane S. McKimmon becomes the first female inducted into NC State's chapter of Phi Kappa Phi.
- 5/20/1927 Agronomy lab work Students in the Agronomy 135 course (Farm Terracing) spend the day outside doing lab work, including surveying the land in preparation for planning tile drains.
- 6/7/1927 First degrees conferred to women The first degrees are conferred to women at NC State. Recipients are Jane McKimmon, B.S. in business administration; Charlotte Nelson, B.S. in education; and Mary Elizabeth Yarbrough, M.S. in chemistry. Yarbrough was the first female graduate to have completed all coursework while at NC State, and she went on to become the first woman to earn a master's degree at NC State.
- 1928 First masters degree in Chemical Engineering conferred
- 1928 First female masters degree recipients Lillian P. Wallace becomes the first woman to earn a masters degree in Education. She went on to publish several historical works on politics in Europe. Virginia F. Harris becomes the first woman to earn a masters degree in Rural Sociology.
- 1928 Courses in religion first offered Professor W. N. Hicks taught the first courses in religion. Although the courses were listed in the 1927-1928 college catalog, they were not taught before Hicks became an assistant professor in 1928.
- 9/29/1928 Increased female enrollment Twenty-one female students enroll at State College for the 1928-29 academic year, twice as many as the previous year.
- 1929 Department of Forestry established The Department of Forestry is established, with Julius V. Hofmann selected to lead the department.
- 1930 Genetics curriculum established Genetics curriculum taught as a component of coursework in Agronomy, Zoology, and Plant Pathology departments.
- 1930 (circa) Rural Sociology Department merges with the Agricultural Economics Department The result of this merger was the creation of the Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology Department.
- 1930 First female to enroll as a freshman Ada Curtis Spencer becomes the first female to enroll as a freshman and complete a four-year degree from NC State. She majored in social science.
- 1930 First Industrial Engineering courses
- 5/2/1930 Industrial Engineering curriculum established Curriculum in industrial engineering is announced, with the first courses to be offered in the fall of 1930
- 1931 Department of Forestry renamed the Division of Forestry
- 1931 Consolidation Act The Consolidation Act is passed by the North Carolina General Assembly, with the following provisions: 1. State College becomes one of three campuses of the Consolidated University of North Carolina. The other campuses are UNC-Chapel Hill and the Women's College in Greensboro (which later became UNC-Greensboro). 2. State College's name is changed to the North Carolina State College of Agriculture and Engineering of the University of North Carolina 3. The School of Education becomes the Department of Education 4. The School of Science and Business is abolished. No new students will be admitted to this school after 1933. Under consolidation, State College's Board of Trustees is abolished, and a new board of trustees is established at the consolidated level to oversee all three of the campuses. This arrangement continues until the creation of the UNC System in 1972.
- 1931 Department of Industrial Engineering established The Department of Industrial Engineering is established and located in Daniels Hall.
- 5/21/1931 The Order of Thirty and Three The Order of Thirty and Three is founded by members of the sophomore class; there are eleven charter members.
- 1932 First female M.S. recipient in Textiles Lillian Tyler Jones becomes the first female to earn an M.S. degree from the School of Textiles.
- 1932 First female to recieve a degree in Landscape Architecture Elizabeth Lee Lawrence becomes the first woman to earn a B.S. degree in Landscape Architecture.
- 1933 First female M.S. recipient in Economics Katherine W. Sams becomes the first woman to earn an M.S. degree in Economics.
- 1933 First female M.S. recipient in Biology Maud K. Schaub becomes the first woman to earn an M.S. degree in Biology.
- 2/21/1934 Academic dress required during commencement The senior class passes a resolution requesting that faculty who participate in commencement exercises wear caps and gowns.
- 10/26/1934 Honor system abolished A faculty vote officially abolishes the honor system at State College; teachers will now have to remain in the classroom during all quizzes and exams.
- 12/3/1934 Exemption proposal denied The faculty deny a proposal to exempt senior class from all examinations.
- 1935 Department of Geology renamed The Department of Geology is renamed the Department of Geological Engineering.
- 9/1935 Consolidation of engineering programs The process of consolidating State College's and UNC-Chapel Hill's engineering programs into one program at State College begins.

- 7/1/1938 Consolidation of Engineering Program The Consolidated University (NC State, UNC, and Woman's College) consolidates all engineering programs at NC State. Engineering faculty and $40,000 worth of equipment are transferred from UNC to NC State.
- 9/30/1938 Chemistry research Female chemist J.C. Richmond of State College is awarded a grant to study the Vitamin C content in goat's milk and the presence of nicotinic acid in cow's milk.
- 1939 Department of Ethics and Religion The department of Ethics is renamed the Department of Ethics and Religion.
- 2/17/1939 Attendance policy set The Student Welfare Committee approves a plan that allows juniors and seniors with a B cumulative grade point average to have ten unexcused absences per term and twenty per year, but no more than sixty during their four-year academic careers.
- 1940 Food Science curriculum established Work done in food science is scattered throughout several departments, namely Animal Industry, Horticulture, and Poultry Science.
- 1940 Department of Agriculture and Biological Chemistry relocated Department of Agriculture and Biological Chemistry relocates from Winston Hall to Withers Hall.
- 1940 Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering The Department of Architectural Engineering is renamed the Department of Architecture and Architectural Engineering.
- 1940 Department of Experimental Statistics established
- 1940 Department of Industrial Engineering relocated The Department of Industrial Engineering moves from Daniels Hall to the 1911 Building.
- 1940 First female M.S. recipients in Agricultural Chemistry Margaret Kramer and Martha S. Richard become the first women to receive M.S. degrees in agricultural chemistry.
- 1940 First female M.S. recipient in Animal Ecology Myrtha M. Wilson becomes the first woman to earn an M.S. degree in animal ecology.
- 1940 First female M.S. recipient in Occupational Information and Guidance Ethel C. Sheridan becomes the first woman to earn an M.S. in Occupational Information and Guidance.
- 11/1940 First female full professor and department head Gertrude Cox is hired as Professor of Statistics and head of the Department of Experimental Statistics, becoming the first woman at State College to occupy either rank.
- 1941 Diesel Program One of the most significant contributions to the war effort is the Diesel Program, developed by the Mechanical Engineering Department. The program trains more than 1,500 members of the Navy.
- 1941 First branch library opens The Architecture Library opens as the first branch library, with Grace Sims Dalton as the first librarian. This library is renamed the Harrye B. Lyons Design Library in 1968.
- 1941 First female Engineering graduate Katharine Stinson becomes the first woman to graduate from NC State's School of Engineering. Stinson received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree, Aeronautical Option. Stinson was taking flying lessons at the old Raleigh Airport on US-401 when Amelia Earhart flew in for a visit in the early 1930s. When Stinson told Earhart that she wanted to become a pilot, Earhart advised her to become an engineer, a career Stinson pursued in spite of obstacles that prevented most young women from striving for such a degree. Stinson was told she must enter State College as a junior, so she completed forty-eight semester hours in one year at Meredith (including two summer sessions) to attain her goal. Besides being the first woman engineer to graduate from NC State, Stinson was also the first woman engineer hired by the Civil Aeronautics Administration, now the Federal Aviation Administration. By the time she retired from the FAA, as Technical Assistant Chief of the Engineering and Manufacturing Division, she had served as the third president of the Society of Woman Engineers and on a presidential advisory committee for aviation safety under Lyndon Johnson. "I just wanted to be a good engineer . . . I just did my job and most of the men accepted me," Stinson once said.
- 1942 First Architectural Engineering female graudate Margery Belle Garriss becomes the first woman to graduate in Architectural Engineering.
- 1942 Division of Landscape Architecture established Division of Landscape Architecture established within the Department of Horticulture.
- 4/17/1942 Special summer courses The faculty approve a plan to hold fall engineering classes in the summer as part of a nationwide war effort to accelerate graduation at technical schools for the benefit of the war effort.
- 4/24/1942 Higher female enrollment sought Increased enrollment by women needed in engineering courses; urgent appeals are made as the male students leave to fight in the war.
- 1943 Department of History and Political Science established
- 2/12/1943 Defense classes Plans are announced for up to 2,000 military trainees to enroll at State College to take specialized defense classes through the United States War Department; the college will operate as two separate units: one for the military and one civilians.
- 10/1/1943 Engineering fellowships for women Eighteen young women win a fellowship of $1,425 from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, which will employ them as engineering aides after they complete a 48-week course offered by State College.
- 1944 Textile Library established The Textiles Library is established, with Rachel Penn Lane as the first librarian. The Textiles Library was originally located in the main library, but relocated to Nelson Hall the following year (1945). The library was renamed the Burlington Textiles Library in 1954, when Burlington Industries funded its expansion.
- 1945 Department of Modern Languages The Department of Modern Languages and Translation Services is renamed the Department of Modern Languages.
- 1945 Department of Botany and Plant Pathology established A Plant Pathology section is created within the School of Agriculture, and a new Department of Botany and Plant Pathology is also created.
- 4/1945 John Lampe becomes Engineering dean John Harold Lampe becomes Dean of the School of Engineering. During his time at NC State, Lampe oversaw the expansion of the engineering program as it became one of the largest in the country, while also facilitating the addition of new instructional and research programs, especially nuclear engineering. Lampe retired from NC State in 1962.
- 1946 Minerals Research Laboratory opens The Minerals Research Laboratory (run by the School of Engineering) opens in Asheville, North Carolina.
- 1946 Division of Architecture and Landscape Design established
- 1946 First Experimental Statistics M.S. degree conferred Jeanne Freeman becomes the first person to earn an M.S. degree in Experimental Statistics.
- 3/1/1946 Diesel Engineering graduate program established After receiving a loan of $2,000,000 worth of diesel engines from the U.S. Navy, the College of Engineering is able to launch a graduate program in Diesel Engineering.
- 8/1946 Trailwood founded More than 75 trailers (forming what was known as the "City of Trailers" or "Trailwood") were constructed so that married WWII veterans and their families could attend NC State on the GI Bill. In 1949, Trailwood was relocated, and Williams Hall was built in its place.
- 1947 Department of Industrial and Rural Recreation established Department of Industrial and Rural Recreation established in the School of Education.
- 1947 Department of Textile Chemistry established
- 1948 Department of Agricultural Engineering relocates The Department of Agricultural Engineering moves to Clark Hall.
- 1948 Masters degrees first offered in Agricultural Engineering
- 1948 School of Education re-established
- 1948 First female Chemical Engineering graduate Lois Madden became the first woman to graduate with a degree in Chemical Engineering.
- 5/23/1948 School of Design established The School of Design is established, with the Division of Architecture and Landscape Design incorporated into the curriculum. Henry Kamphoefner from the University of Oklahoma becomes the first dean of the school.
- 1949 Department of Philosophy and Religion The Department of Ethics and Religion is renamed the Department of Philosophy and Religion.
- 1949 Record graduating class More than 1,000 students graduate from State College for the first time.
- 1949 Department of Wood Science and Technology established
- 1949 Female faculty increases Twenty-two women are listed on the faculty, most at the instructor or laboratory technician level. Departments with more than one female member include English (six), Statistics (three), Textiles (three), and Modern Languages (two). Women are also on the faculty in Architecture, Agricultural Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies, Chemistry, Engineering, Research, and Agronomy.
- 1950 Division of Biological Sciences established The Division of Biological Sciences is established; the Department of Zoology and Entomology is placed within.

- 1950 Nuclear engineering program approved Harold Lampe, Dean of the School of Engineering, approves the building of a nuclear reactor on campus and the establishment of a collegiate nuclear engineering program, both firsts in the nation.

- 1951 Graduate admission for African Americans The Consolidated University of North Carolina decides that African American students are eligible for admission into graduate programs.
- 3/21/1951 Department of Landscape Architecture accredited The Department of Landscape Architecture receives accreditation from the American Society of Landscape Architects, becoming the second to do so in the South, and one of only ten accredited schools in the U.S.
- 4/27/1951 Dedication of Riddick Laboratory Over 200 citizens gather for a ceremony at the newly-opened Riddick Laboratory. The lab building, constructed for $1,300,000, is dedicated to Dr. Wallace Carl Riddick, NC State's first Dean of Engineering, and the university's fourth president.
- 7/1951 New textiles equipment A velvet carpet loom is installed on campus for use by the School of Textiles.
- 1952 School of Forestry moves The School of Forestry moves from Ricks Hall to Kilgore Hall.
- 1952 Department of Genetics moves The Department of Genetics moves to Gardner Hall.
- 1952 Department of Agronomy moves The Department of Agronomy moves to Williams Hall.
- 1952 Department of Zoology moves The Department of Zoology moves to Gardner Hall.
- 1952 School of General Studies established The non-degree-granting School of General Studies is established (now the degree-granting College of Humanities and Social Sciences). It replaces the Basic Division.
- 11/14/1952 Dean resigns Dr. James H. Hilton resigns his position as the Dean of the School of Agriculture.
- 12/8/1952 Scott Hall opens State College celebrates the opening of Scott Hall, the new poultry science building, named for Robert Walter Scott. Construction of Scott Hall cost the college $380,110.97.
- 1953 First Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering conferred
- 1953 First African-American graduate students admitted State College admits two African-American graduate students into the School of Engineering: Robert Clemons and Hardy Liston. Clemons became the college's first black graduate; Liston later withdrew and didn't complete his degree.

- 5/29/1953 Student success in the School of Design A popular myth that there is a "high academic mortality rate" for School of Design students is debunked. Of the 629 students enrolled in the School of Design, only 12 received flunking grades, a 2% mortality rate - much less than the rumored rate of 10%.
- 9/5/1953 Nuclear reactor goes into operation The R-1 reactor was the first non-government-run nuclear reactor in the world and the first designed, built, and operated by an academic institution. Design and construction had begun in 1950. It was the first of four reactors operated at NC State.

In addition to serving as a professor of mathematics education, Dr. Clark coordinated all activities related to the university’s Affirmative Action Plan. Dr. Clark was instrumental in the founding of NC State’s African American Cultural Center, the Peer Mentor program, and the African American Symposium.

- 4/24/1992 Holladay Medal established The Board of Trustees established the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal for Excellence to honor NC State faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to the university through achievements in research, teaching, or extension and engagement.
- 1993 Master of Accounting program established
- 1994 Biomedical Engineering concentration established An undergraduate Biomedical Engineering concentration is established within the College of Engineering.
- 1994 NC State is awarded a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa
- 1994 First female to receive Holladay Medal Barbara Parramore became the first female faculty member to receive the Holladay Medal for Excellence.
- 1995 Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education The Graphic Communications program merges with the Math and Science Education program to form the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education.
- 1995 Student Center Annex named for Dr. Augustus Witherspoon Administrators renamed the Student Center Annex in honor of Dr. Augustus Witherspoon, it was the first building on campus named for an African American. Dr. Witherspoon earned his Ph.D. in Botany from NCSU in 1971, making him the second African American student to receive a Ph.D. from NC State. He joined the faculty as Instructor of Botany and eventually held the following posts at NCSU: Full Professor, Assistant Dean, Acting Dean and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, Associate Provost and Coordinator of African-American Affairs.
- 8/7/1995 Margaret A. Zahn becomes Dean of College of Humanities and Social Sciences Margaret A. Zahn, nationally known for her studies on violence in the United States, becomes Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
- 1996 Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management The Department of Textile and Apparel Management is renamed the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology and Management.
- 1996 Park Scholars Program founded
- 1998 Students rally in support of Affirmative Action A crowd of approximately 500 students and faculty members rallied in Witherspoon in support of affirmative action. Students opposed UNC system President Molly Broad’s proposal to eliminate race based programs within the UNC system.
- 1999 Genomic Science degrees NC State becomes one of the first land-grant universities to offer masters' and doctoral degrees in genomic science.
- 2000 Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology The Department of Toxicology is renamed the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology.

- 2000 Daniel L. Solomon becomes fourth dean of PAMS Statistics professor Daniel L. Solomon is named the fourth dean of the College.
- 2001 Master of Science in Applied Communication first offered
- 2001 Bachelor's of Science Degree in Biomedical Engineering approved
- 2001 Department of Psychology transferred The Department of Psychology is transferred from the College of Education (formerly, the College of Education and Psychology) to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.
- 2003 Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering The Department of Civil Engineering is renamed the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering.
- 2003 Women in Science and Engineering program established The Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program is established with 56 freshman women with majors in PAMS and the College of Engineering. As of 2009, this “living and learning village” has a full complement of 256 women majoring in five colleges across campus, and a high school chapter has been established at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.
- 12/1/2003 Department of Biomedical Engineering established The Department of Biomedical Engineering is established, co-located at UNC-Chapel Hill's School of Medicine and NC State's College of Engineering.
- 2004 Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources The Department of Forestry is renamed the Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources.
- 2004 Fox Science Teaching Laboratory opens The Fox Science Teaching Laboratory opens, making new undergraduate chemistry lab facilities to students.
- 2004 Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering The Department of Chemical Engineering is renamed the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.
- 2005 Master of Social Work program established
- 2005 Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering moves The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering moves from Daniels Hall to Engineering Building II on Centennial Campus.
- 2005 Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering The Department of Industrial Engineering is renamed the Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, making it the first named department at NC State.
- 2006 Department of Adult and Higher Education The Department of Adult and Community College Education is renamed the Department of Adult and Higher Education.
- 2006 Department of Plant Biology The Department of Botany is renamed the Department of Plant Biology.
- 2006 Department of Political Science and Public Administration divides The Department of Political Science and Public Administration divides into two departments: Department of Political Science and the Department of Public Administration; these two departments comprise the School of Public and International Affairs (within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences)
- 2007 Department of Physics moves The Department of Physics moves into its new home in Riddick Hall, which had been completely gutted and renovated to provide the department with about 10,000 square feet of badly needed space for its growing number of faculty, staff and students.
- 5/2007 Department of Elementary Education established The Department of Elementary Education is established within the College of Education.
- 2008 Department of Biology The Department of Zoology is renamed the Department of Biology.
- 2008 Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences moves The Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, along with the College of Natural Resources, moves into a new wing of Jordan Hall. The new wing is comprised of 10,000 square feet of high-tech classrooms and teaching laboratories and quiet and comfortable offices and meeting spaces.
- 2009 Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies The Department of Philosophy and Religion is renamed the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
- 2009 SAS Hall dedicated SAS Hall is dedicated as the new home of the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics. The 119,000 square-foot building houses state-of-the-art classrooms, computer labs, tutorial centers and meeting and study space for students and faculty.
- 2010 Master of Social Work Program established Advanced Standing Master of Social Work Program established.
- 3/2010 Department of Forest Biomaterials The Department of Wood and Paper Science is renamed the Department of Forest Biomaterials.
- 2012 Poultry Science department renamed The department becomes the Prestage Family Department of Poultry Science after receiving a $10 million gift to honor of Bill and Marsha Prestage, owners of the Prestage Farms poultry and pork production company.
