Norm Sloan, men's basketball head coach

Norman Sloan was hired as the new head basketball coach at NC State in 1966. Sloan, who was a player on Everett Case's first basketball team at State (1946-1947), went on to become the second highest game-wining coach in NC State men's basketball history behind Case. His record included the 1974 NCAA championship. He was inducted into the NC State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013.

Burley Mitchell graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later became a Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Live wolf mascot at Carter-Finley

Student government sold 25-cent shares to purchase a timber wolf, which was shown during the first game played at what became Carter-Finley Stadium. The animal howled, making it popular, but it was later discovered to be a coyote.

First game played in Carter Stadium

Carter Stadium, as it was originally known, opened as the football team took on South Carolina. Carter Stadium and the A.E. Finley Fieldhouse were dedicated during a halftime ceremony.

NC State received first NSF grant

NC State received its first National Science Foundation grant to create a science development plan in order to strengthen faculties in the biosciences; support materials, mechanics and electrotechnics in engineering; and support the social sciences.

Solomon Hersh joined textile faculty

Solomon "Sol" Hersh joined the faculty of the Department of Textile Technology. Previously, he received his BS from NC State in 1949. In 1995, he became the first faculty member from the College of Textiles to receive the Alexander Holladay Medal for Excellence.

The International Farm Youth Exchange (IFYE) delegates Jane Warren and Karen Brewer joined Filipino President Ferdinand Marcos in planting his nation's new "miracle" rice along with other Filipino delegates.

Everett Case remembered for legendary career

Men's basketball coach Everett Case passed away on this date. His record at NC State was 378-133, and he led the team to numerous Southern Conference and ACC championships. At his funeral, his last recruiting class of players served as pallbearers. In 2012, he was inducted into the NC State Athletics Hall of Fame.
