1910s

1915 First psychology courses offered

The course was Educational Psychology.

1920s

1927 Department of Psychology established
1927 First psychologist hired

Dr. Karl Garrison was the first psychologist to join the faculty at NC State.

1940s

1940 Dr. McGehee became psychology department head

Dr. McGehee became department head until his departure in 1948.

1948 School of Education reestablished

The School of Education was reestablished and became the home for the Department of Pyschology.

1950s

1956 South Korean graduate students enrolled

Three South Korean graduate students enrolled: Wan Yong Chen (nuclear engineering), Jong Soon Kim (psychology), and Jong Chul Park (chemical engineering).

1956 Dr. Howard Miller became psychology department head

Dr. Howard Miller became department head until 1977.

1970s

1977 Paul Thayer became psychology department head

1980s

1983 First woman named Alumni Distinguished Professor

Katherine W. Klein, Associate Professor of Psychology, became the first woman faculty member named an "Alumni Distinguished Professor."

1987 School of Education renamed

The School of Education became the College of Education and Psychology.

1990s

1992 Dr. David Martin became psychology department head

2000s

2001 Department of Psychology transferred

The Department of Psychology was transferred from the College of Education, formerly the College of Education and Psychology, to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

2006 Douglas J. Gillan became psychology department head

Douglas J. Gillan became department head until 2016.

2010s

2017 Christopher B. Mayhorn became psychology department head
