Original Alma Mater written

The original Alma Mater song was written by A. E. Escott, although it was replaced as the official alma mater of the college in 1925.

Thompson Gymnasium condemned

The Raleigh City Building Inspector condemned Thompson Gymnasium hours before a men's basketball game against Duke. Only a few reporters and college officials were allowed to attend the next home game against High Point College. From then until the completion of Reynolds Coliseum in 1949, home games were played in Raleigh's Memorial Auditorium.

Page Hall opened

Page Hall was built by Hobart Brown Upjohn and named for Walter Hines Page, who was a member of the Watauga Club and instrumental in the founding of the college.

Morris Building named

The building that housed the Division of Maintenance and Operations was formally named the Morris Building after William Flaude Morris, long-time director of the Service Department at State College.

Margaret A. Zahn became dean

Margaret A. Zahn, nationally known for her studies on violence in the U.S., became dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. She served in the position until 2001.

Chemistry research conducted

Woman chemist J. C. Richmond of State College was awarded a grant to study the Vitamin C content in goat's milk and the presence of nicotinic acid in cow's milk.

The commencement address was given by Dr. John H. Cook, dean of the School of Education of the North Carolina College for Women. The invocation was given by H. A. Cox of Saint Saviour's Church.

Hobby Shop renamed

The Hobby Shop in the College Union became known as the Craft Shop. Because of space constraints, it offered some programs at other facilities on campus.

Frank Thompson Gymnasium named

The new gymnasium on campus was named after Frank Thompson (class of 1910), a former athlete at State College who was killed during service in WWI.

CAMINOS Pre-College program established

"CAMINOS: Your Journey to College" is a program for Hispanic/Latinx students that highlights the college preparation process and university academic experience from the lens of community building and cultural exploration. The program was initiated by Marcela Torres-Cervantes, Assistant Director for Community Outreach and Engagement in Multicultural Student Affairs and Melissa Betancur, Admissions Recruiter.

First woman hired as full professor and department head

Gertrude Cox was hired as professor of statistics and head of the Department of Experimental Statistics. She was the first woman at State College hired as full professor and department head at the same time.

Men's cross country won ACC Team Championship

The State College Cross Country team became champions during the first year of the ACC. The team also won the ACC championship the following year in 1954.

John William Harrelson headed college

John William Harrelson, class of 1909, was appointed head of the college. He led NC State until 1953. (Biography of John Harrelson)

State College name changed

North Carolina State College was renamed "North Carolina State of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh." The new name was met with discontent by faculty members who labeled it awkward and embarrassing.

John Harrelson died

Former Chancellor John Harrelson died. Harrelson was a graduate of NC State and served in various positions at the college for 46 years, including 19 years as Chancellor.

WKNC went off the air

The college radio station WKNC announced it will go off the air for the remainder of the school year due to an air conditioner failure in the studio.

London Symphony performed

The London Symphony performed on campus as a part of the Friends of the College concert series. The orchestra received a standing ovation after their performance, playing music from Stravinsky, Vaughn, Mozart, and Brahms.

As State College celebrated its 50th anniversary, materials on the institution's history were collected in the library. This formed the basis of what would later become the university archives.
