1960s

1964 The Department of Extension Personnel Development was established
1964-1991 Edgar J. Boone served as head of the Department of Extension Personnel Development
1965 The Department of Extension Personnel Development was restructured into the Department of Adult Education
1967 Women appointed full professors

The fourth and fifth women hired as full professors at NC State were appointed. Hedwig Hirschmann Triantaphyllou advanced to full professor of plant pathology and Emily Quinn Pugh became a full professor of adult education.

1970s

1970 Department of Adult Education renamed

The Department of Adult Education was renamed the Department of Adult and Community College Education.

1978 Adult and Community College Education history written

Bertie Edwards Fearing wrote A History of the Department of Adult and Community College Education at North Carolina State University: A Need, a Response, and a Model. A print edition exists in the library.

1990s

1996 June St. Clair Atkinson awarded doctorate

June Atkinson was awarded a Doctor of Education degree. She later became the first woman to serve as North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction.

1998 Carl Harris awarded doctorate

Carl Harris was awarded a Doctor of Education degree. He later became the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Education for Policy and Strategic Initiatives.

1999-2009 Carol E. Kasworm served as head of the Department of Adult Education

2000s

2006 Department of Adult and Community College Education renamed

The Department of Adult and Community College Education was renamed the Department of Adult and Higher Education.

2010s

2010-2012 Robert Serow served as head of the Department of Leadership, Policy and Adult and Higher Education
2012-2015 Mary Ann Danowitz served as head of the Department of Leadership, Policy and Adult and Higher Education
2017-2019 Penny A. Pasque served as head of the Department of Leadership, Policy and Adult and Higher Education

2020s

2023 Joy Gaston Gayles became head of the Department of Leadership, Policy and Adult and Higher Education
