Department of Social Work
1970s
The curriculum was developed from two social work courses that were offered by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. The two courses were redesigned and five new courses were developed.
A bachelor's degree in social work was first offered, and the social work program joined the School of Education.
Dr. Wilma C. Peebles-Wilkins joined the university's faculty as assistant professor for the social work program. Dr. Peebles-Wilkins was one of the first African American women to graduate from NC State, and she later served as associate department head and director of the social work program.
1980s
Social work students established the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Alpha Delta Mu, the National Social Work Honor Society.
Dr. Nelson Reid became the first full professor of social work in 1983. In the following year, he was appointed director of the social work program.
1990s
The Epsilon Kappa chapter of the Phi Alpha Honor Society was formed to recognize and promote scholastic achievement among students and faculty.
2000s
This association formed from the merger of three other student organizations on campus: the Undergraduate Student Social Work Association, the Student Association of Black Social Workers, and the Student Association of Christian Social Workers.
2010s
The Department of Social Work and Campbell Law School formed a dual degree program that enabled students to earn a Master of Social Work and a Juris Doctor (law degree).
