Forestry Team won championship

The NC State Forestry Team took home the championship at the annual Conclave, an event based around forestry skills such as logging, timer estimation, sawing, and log rolling.

General Eisenhower visited during Home and Farm Week

Mi Familia Salsabor celebration held

The Latinx organization, Mi Familia, held its annual cultural event called Salsabor to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. The celebration included traditional food, performances, and presentations from students and guest speakers.

Laurie Henes won NCAA individual championship

Laurie Henes won the NCAA championship in the 5000-meter event in 1991. She was a six-time All-American and a three-time All-ACC performer in track and field.

First Four honored

The university celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first four African American undergraduate students who had enrolled at NC State. Three of the four were honored at an event in Stewart Theatre.

Students participated in "Occupy Raleigh" protest

NC State students participated in a multi-day protest by “Occupy Raleigh” outside of the NC Capitol. Student speakers at the event criticized US economic and social policy and called for reforms.

Men's swimmer competed in modern pentathlon

Rob Stull, a member of the men's swimming and diving team, competed in the Olympics modern pentathlon event in the 1984, 1988, and 1992 games. He also made the men's fencing epee team in the 1988 Olympics.

"Ides of March" protest held

Students and alumni marched from the Bell Tower to the capital district to protest an upcoming amendment to North Carolina's constitution, which proposed legally banning gay marriage in the state. The event was called "Ides of March."

State College celebrated 50th anniversary

Dean of Students E. L. Cloyd led an academic procession to Pullen Hall for the college's 50th anniversary celebration. President Franklin Roosevelt sent a message of congratulations to the college, and the City of Raleigh declared the event "State College Day."

Leigha Hancock won NCAA Regional title

Leigha Hancock won the beam title at the 2008 NCAA Regional to advance to the NCAA championships. It was her second individual event win since 2006, making her the first gymnast to win two NCAA regional events in program history.

MLK Jr. spoke at Reynolds Coliseum

Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at Reynolds Coliseum to a crowd of over 5,000 individuals as well as a television audience of WUNC-TV. At the same time as the event, Klu Klux Klan members marched in violent protest in downtown Raleigh. Despite this, King continued with his speech.

Sandra Cisneros reading organized on campus

Author and poet Sandra Cisneros gave a reading and talk at an event organized by Multicultural Student Affairs, NC State University Libraries, and the Farm Labor Organizing Committee. Cisneros, a MacArthur Fellow and recipient of the National Medal of the Arts, read a variety of narratives in English and Spanish.

Lucas Kozeniesky competed in Olympics

NC State alumnus, Lucas Kozeniesky, competed for the U.S. Olympic team in the air rifle event. He previously competed in the 2016 Olympics games and earned silver in air rifle at the 2018 Championship of the Americas. Kozeniesky was also the first Wolfpack shooter since 1975 to earn All-America honors.

Kwanzaa Stamp unveiled

The U.S. Postal Service dedicated the 2018 Kwanzaa stamp at NC State's African American Cultural Center (AACC). The Center was chosen to host this event because of its commitment to educating people about the histories, cultures and experiences of African American and Pan-African people. The celebration included music, dancing and special guests.

GLBT Center first annual "Week of Action" held

The GLBT Center hosted its first annual "Week of Action" event in March 2016. The goal of the week was to encourage students, faculty, and staff to explore social justice issues and take action. Events during the week included Transgender Day of Visibility, which is celebrated on March 31st of every year.

Runway of Dreams Fashion Show held

A Runway of Dreams Fashion Show was held in collaboration with Duke University and students at the College of Textiles. The event, "Coming Together, Creating Change," was a virtual adaptive runway show organized to showcase people with disabilities and educate about the need for adaptive clothing and disability representation in the fashion industry.

Textile bookmark calendars competition began

Professor Ernest B. Berry challenged his senior-level students to design and weave a calendar with a School of Textiles design at the top and a monthly calendar positioned below. The winning design resulted in a green-and-white calendar assembled with surplus Fortisan warp and acetate filling. The calendars were popular with members of the class, faculty, and staff, and the project became an annual event.
