Hazel Virginia Clark received a master's degree in occupational information and guidance. She was the first African American woman to receive a master's degree from NC State.

71st Commencement

Informal remarks were given by Governor Luther Hodges, president of the Consolidated University William Friday, and Class President John Phillips Carlton. The baccalaureate sermon was given by Rev. Theodore O. Wedel, canon of Washington Cathedral. Honorary degrees were awarded to William Dunford Appel, Jonathan Worth Daniels, Granville Moorman Read, Oliver Reagan Rowe, Burrhus Frederic Skinner, and Thomas Benton Upchurch.

Paul Zia appointed department head

Paul Zia became the head of civil engineering department in 1979 after joining the civil engineering faculty at NC State in 1961. Professor Zia earned a BS in civil engineering from the National Chiao Tung University of China in 1949, a MS from the University of Washington in 1952, and a PhD from the University of Florida in 1960.

Virtual MLK Project developed

NC State researchers led a reenactment of Dr. Martin Luther King's 1960 "Fill Up the Jails" speech at White Rock Baptist Church in Durham, NC. Further works resulted in the Virtual MLK Project that created an immersive experience by placing audiences into a multimedia representation of the church and listening to the speech from various positions around the sanctuary.

First woman received BS in civil engineering

Emily Catherine Brown Blount of Fayetteville, NC, became the first woman to receive a BS in civil engineering from NC State in 1953. She received a professional degree in civil engineering in 1954. Blount went on to become the first woman licensed as a professional engineer in North Carolina in 1960, and she was inducted into the North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame in 2007.

First woman instructor in plant pathology hired

Hedwig Hirschmann, born in Fuerth, Germany, was the first woman instructor of plant pathology and the fourth woman hired as a professor at NC State. She was hired as a instructor in 1954, and advanced to full professor in 1967. Hirschmann married fellow plant pathology faculty member Anastasios Triantaphyllou in 1960 and taught at NC State until 1992. She is widely recognized for her research in nematode taxonomy.

Wendell H. Murphy Football Center opened

The Wendell H. Murphy Football Center was opened and named after alumnus Wendell Murphy. Murphy graduated with a BS in Agricultural Education in 1960. He later served in the North Carolina House of Representatives and the NC Senate. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by the NC governor. In 1999, he received the Watauga Medal, NC State University's highest honor. He was a Wolfpack Club member for more than 50 years, and he served as president of its board of directors. Murphy made significant contributions to the athletics program and was inducted into the NC State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014.
