61st Commencement

Brief talks were given by Governor W. Kerr Scott; Gordon Gray, president of the Consolidated University; and Chancellor John William Harrelson. The baccalaureate sermon was given by Bishop W. W. Peele of Richmond, VA. This was the first commencement held in Reynolds Coliseum. Honorary degrees were awarded to Harry Reed; dean of the School of Agriculture at Purdue University; Clyde Atkinson Erwin, State Superintendent of Public Instruction for North Carolina; John Flood Matheson, president of Mooresville Mills; Clyde Alvin Dillon, industrialist and benefactor of Raleigh; and Frank Porter Graham, first president of the Consolidated University of North Carolina (now UNC System).

The State College Civil Engineering Society was recognized by and inducted into the North Carolina Society of Civil Engineers.

George B. Hoadley, Edward G. Manning, and William J. Barclay wrote A Brief History of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: College of Engineering, North Carolina State University. An updated version was hosted on the departmental website.

The first State 4-H Short Course for African American youth was held at North Carolina A&T College in Greensboro.

Robert W. Scott graduated

Robert W. Scott graduated from NC State in 1952. He later became the 67th governor of North Carolina from 1969 to 1973.

The Technician was mailed by the Registrar's office to 100 high schools across North Carolina to inform students about activities at NC State.

Colleges still not created at UNC

Colleges to provide agricultural education were still not created at the University of North Carolina, which was an obligation upon receiving land-grant funding. These colleges existed only in theory in the university's course catalogs.

Land scrip funds transferred

The land scrip funds were transferred to the new Raleigh college, which became NC State. University of North Carolina President Battle unsuccessfully opposed the transfer of the land scrip funds from UNC to the proposed agricultural school in Raleigh. A bill was passed on this date to transfer the funds.

Steve Rerych won Olympic gold medal

Swimmer Steve Rerych won medals at the Mexico City Olympics for the 4 x 100 freestyle and 4 x 200 freestyle. At NC State, Rerych was a three-time All-American and nine-time ACC champion. He was the only person in ACC swimming and diving history to be three-time champion in three different events. Rerych was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1993 and the NC State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Land Acknowledgement Statement published

A land acknowledgment statement was published and adopted to recognize and support Indigenous communities in North Carolina and the university. The statement was authored by the NC State American Indian Advisory Council, Student Government and Native American Student Association, and formally adopted by the NC State Staff Senate, Faculty Senate and Student Senate.

Sam Esposito, baseball head coach

Sam Esposito's served as head coach of the baseball team from 1967 to 1987. His career record was 513-253-4, and he was second in career victories at NC State. During this time, the team was 1968 ACC regular-season champions and three-time ACC Tournament Champions (1973-1975). He was ACC "Coach of the Year" in 1984 and 1986. He was inducted into the NC State Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009, the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, and the NC State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Green 'n' Growing project commenced

The NC State University Libraries commenced the Green 'n' Growing project to create online access to information on the history of 4-H and home demonstration in North Carolina. Since then, the Libraries has facilitated access to even more materials on NC Cooperative Extension history.

75th Commencement

The commencement speaker was Clifford M. Hardin, chancellor of the University of Nebraska. Remarks to the graduating class were also given by Governor Terry Sanford and University of North Carolina President William Friday. Honorary degrees were awarded to Henry Armfield Foscue, William Dallas Herring, Louis Isadore Kahn, Lillian Parker Wallace, and David Stathem Weaver.

First woman to hold a named professorship

Elizabeth C. Theil became the first woman at NC State to hold a named professorship and was honored with the University of North Carolina's O. Max Gardner Award.

Dennis Byrd named "All American"

As a football defensive player, Dennis Byrd became a two-time All American in 1966 and 1967. He was a member of the "White Shoes" defense that helped the Wolfpack achieve the rank of No. 3 in the 1967 season and win the Liberty Bowl. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2007, the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010, and the NC State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

Farmers watched a demonstration of State College's fistulated cow during Farm and Home Week in June 1956. Cooperative Extension Service demonstrations like this helped to share knowledge gained at NC State with farmers throughout North Carolina.
