Chancellor Caldwell retired

Dr. John T. Caldwell retired after 15 years as NC State's chancellor. Caldwell oversaw a period of unprecedented growth for the university. Of the nearly 47,000 degrees awarded in the first 85 years of the university, two-thirds were earned during Caldwell's tenure.

A massive student housing shortage left 260 students without housing as classes began.

After the introduction of women's athletics to NC State, costumes were created for a woman version of the wolf mascot.

University administration reversed their stance on streaking and banned the "sport" on campus due to the very high number of streakers running around campus.

Men's basketball won NCAA championship

NC State defeated Marquette, 76-64, in the finals of the NCAA Basketball tournament in Greensboro, NC, to win the 1974 National Championship. Junior forward David Thompson was named Tournament MVP. The Wolfpack also received key contributions from Tom Burleson, Monte Towe, Tim Stoddard, and Mo Rivers during the championship run.

The International Potato Center was established in Peru by NC State and the Peruvian government in an effort to increase the world's supply of white potatoes.

Carter Stadium renamed Carter-Finley Stadium

The stadium was renamed in honor of Wilbert James "Nick" Carter, Harry Clifton Carter, and Albert Earle Finley. Both Carters were top executives at J. P. Stevens and Finley was a successful businessman and philanthropist.

North Tower dedicated

The original 11-story bookstack tower, now the North Tower of the D. H. Hill Jr. Library, was dedicated. With the addition, the bookstacks were opened to all users. Previously, the library had closed bookstacks.

Libraries departments reorganized

A reorganization of departments in the Libraries results in three major divisions headed by assistant directors. The divisions were General Services (including circulation), Reference Services, and Collection Development and Organization (including technical services). The school libraries, Design, Textiles, and Forest Resources, were classified as branch libraries.

NC State became a charter member of the Southeastern Library Network (SOLINET). Library Director I. T. Littleton served on SOLINET's initial board of directors and chaired its first bylaws committee.

Paul H. Derr Track named

The University Track was named the Paul H. Derr Track for the long-time track and field coach.
